Urban Gatherings
“What attracts people most, it would appear, is other people.”
William Whyte, The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces
Urban Gatherings is a series of urban furniture proposed for Beirut Souks outdoor spaces after careful observation and analysis of people behavior, activities and needs.
The design approach begins by defining a catalogue of modular elements (planter, bench, table, bin, ashtray, socket and book box), each with specific function to enhance the public space experience. Visible holes - following a grid - on the element faces allow an easy assemblage of the modules together.
When combining these modules together, a wide possibility of combinations is offered. Five scenarios are presented, each with a specific theme, in a specific location in the Souks.
These combinations become not only a game of gathering modules, but also a catalyst for gathering people.
